Luke 19:41-42
41 As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Jesus has just entered into Jerusalem with a lot of fan fair. It was immediately clear to Him that there was a fundamental disconnect between Jerusalem’s understanding of why He had come and His understanding of His coming. They believed that He had come to be a political king, but He came for something much more profound.
This is where we enter the story here in Luke 19:41-42. Jesus is looking over Jerusalem and weeping because of their misunderstanding of His coming. Their misunderstanding of the meaning of Christ’s coming comes with profound loss. They lose an understanding of God’s mercy; they lose the gift of love; they lose the gift of hope. It’s not they do not exists, it’s just that “they are hidden from your (their) eyes.”
This brings it back to us in our contemporary setting. This passage is a warning for us. We see Jerusalem as a metaphor for all of God’s people. Jesus’ weeps for us as we go throughout our day to day lives ignoring the blessing that He has for us. They are there, but they are hidden from our lives. It is true that some of us do see these blessings daily. What is the difference between those who see them and those who do not? Well, there are several. I would focus in on one - that being the idea of “spiritual expectation.” We need to live our lives in such a way that anticipates God’s blessings in our lives. Not that He owes it to us, but He promises them to us. God’s promises for blessing in one manner or another are all throughout Scripture.
God’s blessings need not be hidden from our eyes . . . we can live with spiritual expectation as we humble ourselves and understand why Christ has come.
