Enduring Forever through Change

For, “All flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, And the flower falls off, But the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:24-25 NASB

We are officially in fall.  As I look out the window in my office I see the trees changing colors.  The leaves are quickly falling off and dying.  At our house we have perennials that are dying off as well (hopefully to come to life again in the spring!).    The turning of the seasons reminds us that there is a cycle of life for everything under heaven.  Created things are bound to get broken, die, or merely  just change into something else.

This passage from Peter reminds us of the same thing that the change of seasons reminds us of - created things die, “grace withers and flowers fall off . . . “  As Christians we face death every day.  Death that is much more profound than leaves falling off of trees or grace dying.  But, as usual, the Scripture gives us the Good News.  There is one thing that never dies - the Word of the Lord.  God’s Word is always faithful and can always be counted on.  The comfort of God’s love is always available in His Word.

I’m not sure what loss you are going through today - maybe just a changing of the seasons.  No matter what , remember that God’s Word doesn’t perish - it endures forever.

Desiring God's Will and Jesus Christ

"I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.” - Psalm 40:8
____________________________________________________________________________________

Over the years I’ve asked this question a lot: what is God’s will for my life?  Should I stay at my job (not my current job - I’m happy at Trinity!), should we buy a new house, should I go back to school, should I end this friendship or begin another one?  I would say that this has been a life-long question.  See - I do desire to do God’s will, but sometimes God’s will is hard to discern.  Sometimes it’s easy - forgive someone who need to be forgiven, don’t cheat on my taxes, love my neighbor as myself, etc; but sometimes it is hard.  I know that a lot of you feel the same way.  My conversation have been had in my office questioning what direction you should go and what God has for your future.  Many our you are searching out God’s will for your life.

Here is Psalm 40  David is unsure of God’s will for his life. Despite being unsure, He “desires” to do God’s will.  I believe that is really where it starts.  Even though we may not know God’s full will for our lives - we desire for it.  When we desire something we search for it; we seek to attain it.

Actually finding God’s will really is finding Jesus Christ.  Jeremiah 29:13 (a foreshadowing of the coming of Jesus) says " 13And you shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.”

So what do we need to do?  Search knowing we will find God’s will in Jesus Christ!

Got Thirst?

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. - Psalms 63:1
_______________________________________________________________

Have you ever been REALLY thirsty?  I’m talking about thirsty enough that your singular focus was finding water - no matter what.  Missy and I were in France for our tenth anniversary.  We were busy with sightseeing, etc. and I never really noticed how thirsty I was getting.  When I stopped walking to take a rest I started to notice - I was parched.  My whole body wanted and needed water.  From that moment on I was consumed (no pun intended) with my search for water.  As we wandered around Paris I ignored all the good art work, architecture, etc. - all I was looking for was water in any store I could find it.  I eventually found water and my thirst went away.

David is the author of this Psalm, Psalm 63.  He was in the wilderness hiding from the attacks of his son Absalom when he wrote it.  David speaks of being thirsty. This was probably both literal and metaphorical. He was literally thirsty because he fled to the desert to escape the wrath of his son.  There was no water in site as most likely David was hiding in a series of caves so as not to be killed.  David was also metaphorically thirsting for God.  He felt alone, discouraged, and defeated.  He was thirsting for the the mercy that only God can provide.

I’m guessing that many of you as you receive this have coffee or some drink in hand or around you.  You’re probably not so thirsty that you are wandering around your place of work or house looking for water!  But let me ask you this question: are you thirsting for something deeper in your soul?  You might have water . . . but do you have peace deep in your soul or are you thirsting for it?  If you are thirsting - earnestly seek God out like David says here in Psalms 63:1.  You know where to find Him . . .
