I like a lot of things. Here is a short list: my family (first and foremost), my jeep, my motorcycle, my books, my records, my guitars . . . WOW, well that is a longer list than I initially thought! Can you relate? My guess is yes - there are a lot of things that you like. In this passage by written by John (yes, the same John from the Gospel and Revelation) he issues a stern warning. We are not to like, love, or value things in this world MORE than we love or value what we have in the Father through Jesus Christ. Let’s look at an example. We know from the Scripture in Jesus Christ we have true peace. Are we willing to give up this true peace for stuff in the world? We don’t get peace through stuff . . . only through Christ. Buying stuff gives us an initial high, but we end up feeling empty. Intuitively we know that we have a deeper longing . . . and that longing is only filled through Jesus Christ.
It’s OK to like stuff, but don’t love or value it more than your life and peace in Christ. Today let’s be filled with the authentic peace, love, and all that comes with our true love in Jesus Christ!
