No Separation Anxiety . . .

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Romans 8:35,37 NRSV

I remember when my girls were young.  Of all the activities that we did, going to the mall was among the most nerve-wracking.  I was constant afraid that in the big crowds I would be separated from them as they gleefully ran down the concourse trying to get away from me.  While they were having a blast my anxiety was going through the roof.  Being separated from them was what I feared the most.  I would do anything to avoid it.

Separation, more specifically separation from Christ, is the topic of Paul’s writing to the Romans in chapter eight.  Christians occupying the Roman world find themselves in constant anxiety over what would happen to them.  If the Emperor loved them, they could live in peace.  If he did not, they were persecuted and often killed.  The idea of being separated, literally, from Christ and His love was a palpable and real thing.  Lives were at stake.  Paul reminds them though that despite difficulties nothing can separate them (or us) from the love of Christ and all that  this means in and for our lives.

We all have separation anxiety at one level or another.  We don’t like being separated from our loved ones or even from things that we love.  The one thing that we cannot be separated from is Christ and His love for us.  There is nothing that can take away that confidence.  As Christians we need to live each day knowing we live in the richness of Christ’s love.  This transforms how we live our lives.  Take confidence and lives as “more than conquerers” today!

The Gift of Love . . .

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NRSV

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Spider-Man.  I would have given almost anything to be able to shoot those webs out of my wrists and climb on walls!  I dressed up like Spider-Man for Halloween more than once and had all the action figures.  Whatever power Spider-Man had . . . I wanted!  I wasn’t the only one.  Growing up in the age of the birth of super heroes, many of my friends wanted to be one: Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman  . . . the list goes on and on.

The formula for super heroes was easy.  Each one had a main power that made them great.  Superman, while all powerful, was nothing without his ability to fly.  Batman had all kinds of tools, but without his agility he was just an average person.

Here in 1 Corinthians 13 (a popular set of verses, I’m sure you’ve seen  this passage before, perhaps at a wedding) Paul talks about abilities and gifts.  There are a lot of gifts that people can have.  You can be a good speaker.  You can have great knowledge.  You can be a super generous person.  All of this is great, but the greatest super-power you have is the gift of love.  Without love, the rest of the gifts don’t amount to a hill of beans, as they say.  Our ability to express love to one another is our “ super-power” as Christians.  It is what defines us.  Love for one another is a sign of our unity, our community with each others and with others.

Today, exercise your gift of love for someone.   Take time to be a super hero for another in your day!

Singing of God's Love . . .

But I will sing of your might; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been a fortress for me and a refuge in the day of my distress.
Psalm 59:16 NRSV

I’ll admit it - I’m a sing-in-the-car kind of guy.  When a song comes on that I love I turn up the volume on the radio . . . and my voice :).    My love of singing loud and proud is enhanced when I’m in a good mood or if something during the day has gone well.  I’m more inspired to sing when I’m in a good mood.  Often driving is the time when I reflect on God’s faithfulness in my and my family’s life.  I get motivated remembering that I’m God’s child and He has a plan and purpose for my life.  Good times or bad - I’m God’s child.  When I remember this - watch out neighbors because I’m gonna be singing!

Here in Psalm 59, David does a bit of singing!  Despite being bullied and beat down, David sings about God’s “steadfast love” in his life.  I think it is an important point here that David sings in the morning.  Why?  Because this means that David’s praises to God come as one of the first things that he does.  One of the first things that David does is praise God for His faithfulness.  David was going through some rough stuff, nevertheless he praised God for keeping him alive so far.

I don’t know if you like to sing in the car or not (or even the shower :).  Either way, take a minute today to praise God for what He has done in  your life.  How has God been faithful?  How has God blessed you?  How has He shown you His presence today?  However He has, member to “sing aloud” of God’s steadfast love today!  Who knows, maybe you will inspire someone else to sing as well . . .
