I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
 - Psalm 16:8

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

I kept repeating to myself "keep your head up . . . focus on the horizon . . .  " over and over again.  No,  I wasn't crazy, just learning to paddle board!  The young man who rented me the board instructed me to keep my head up and focus on the horizon when I attempt to stand up on the board.  So I was trying desperately to do what he instructed me to do.  After a few tries (and falling in the water several times!) I was able to stand up on my own and paddle around.  Success!  The young man was right:  focus made all the difference in the world.

David also has something to say about focus.  Here in Psalm 16 David says that his focus is always the Lord.  You might say the Lord is his "horizon."  As long as David stays focused on the Lord, he will not fall down or "be shaken."  No matter what happened to David, no matter what storms he faced, he would have the Lord at his right hand.

There is a good word here for us as well.  We will all face storms in our lives.  To be sure, our storms will be different than David's . . . each of our circumstances are unique.  Nevertheless, storms will come and we'll need someone at our right hand.  When we keep our focus on Christ, we'll be able to survive the storms we face.

No matter your storm today, keep your eyes on the Lord . . .

Credit Where Credit is Due . . .

But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

2 Corinthians 10:17-18

At some level, each one of us wants the spotlight.  Well, maybe not the spotlight, but at least some attention every once and a while!  I think it is natural to want attention.  Being recognized by others for something good we have done can be a healthy and encouraging thing.

Being recognized by others is one thing, but promoting yourself is something quite different.  No one likes a braggart!  There is something annoying about someone who is constantly pointing out how good they are at something or how successful they have become.

Here is 2 Corinthians Paul addresses this exact concern.  Apparently there were some believers in Corinth that were quite taken with their own spiritual development.  We might say that they were bragging about how they had grown spiritually.  Paul issues a sharp warning here.  Any spiritual growth in an individual's life had to do with God's work.  No person can take credit for their own growth and "commend" themselves.  It is only God and His work that can "commend" someone.  In short, it's all about God and not about us.

As we start our week, let's remember this: let God's work in your life speak louder than your work.  Let's worry less about getting credit and start GIVING credit to what God has done!
